Good old-fashioned “pie and mash” has been a London food tradition since the days of Queen Victoria. A small meat pie and a generous helping of mashed potato with an optional addition of the steaming parsley sauce known as “liquor,” pie and mash became the staple dish for many hungry families and workers alike. Affordable, filling, and tasty, it was often the only hot meal one might eat in a day.
In 2014, Tooting Arts Club staged SWEENEY TODD in Harrington’s–London’s oldest working pie and mash shop. Steeped in history and atmosphere, this quintessential Victorian pie shop proved to be the perfect chamber of horrors for this iconic Gothic tale. Before each show, audience members were welcomed to arrive early to Harrington’s for their very own meal of pie and mash.
We have continued this pre-show tradition with our guests at the Barrow Street Theatre and we’re delighted that former White House pastry chef Bill Yosses has taken on the role as our official pie maker.

Most seats within the shop (except Row J) include the option to buy a pre-show meal of pie and mash cooked fresh daily by Bill. We offer three types of pie for either $22.50 (meat and veg) or $29.00 (beef wellington), and the price includes pie, a side of mashed potatoes, an optional herbed parsley sauce known as “liquor,” plus either beer, wine, or a non-alcoholic beverage. This meal is a substantial main course portion and won’t leave you feeling hungry! Pie and mash should be purchased in advance, up until noon the day of a performance. However, we often have extra pies that we sell at the door during pie service if you change your mind last minute.

Our pre-show pie & mash menu is below; included in each item is a range of the veggies that Chef Yosses may select from, depending on what is in season or looking particularly delicious from our purveyors. Meat Pie & Mash
Flaky crust Chicken Pot Pie with a medley of fresh veggies that may include Mushrooms, Carrots, Onions, and Black Truffle Zest, served with Yukon Gold gruyere mashed potatoes and optional Italian Parsley & Herbs Sauce.
Vegetarian Pie & Mash
Flaky crust Vegetarian Pot Pie with Lemon Zest and Cheese (Goat, Aged Parmesan, and/or Ricotta) and a medley of fresh veggies that may include Carrots, Onions, Asparagus, Corn, Tomatoes, Mushrooms, Truffles, Squash, Cauliflower, Golden Raisins served with Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes and Optional Italian Parsley and Herbs Sauce.
Beef Wellington Flaky Crust Pie & Mash
Filet of Angus Beef, Aged Sherry, Wheat Flour, Butter, Herbs, Salt, Pepper, Eggs, and a medley of fresh vegetables that may include Mushrooms, Cauliflower, Brussels Sprouts, Carrots, Celery, Vidalia Onions, and Black Truffle Zest, served with Yukon Gold Mashed Potatoes and Optional Italian Parsley and Herbs Sauce.
